This tour will take you to discover the best of the Pacific Coast. You will spend three days in Port Douglas to experience ancient rainforests in Daintree National Park, incredible wildlife, and a cruise to the Outer Barrier Reef. You will then fly to Brisbane, explore the vibrant Queensland capital during a sightseeing river cruise, and set off on the journey via the legendary Pacific coastal drive. You will visit the iconic Gold Coast, with its famous beaches and the world-renowned Surfers Paradise. You will spend a few days in stunning Byron Bay, soak up its amazing atmosphere, and explore the bay and hinterland during the Byron & Beyond tour. Brisbane to Gold Coast

It's a short and simple drive from Brisbane to Gold Coast, as you will follow the Pacific Motorway (M1) from one city to the other. The journey is about 80km (50 miles) and the time it takes depends on traffic as mornings and afternoons can get quite congested as people travel to and from work. Gold Coast is Australia's premier holiday destination visited due to its stunning beaches, shopping, nightlife, theme pars and surf breaks. Surfers Paradise, the most famous Gold Coast's suburb, offers almost two miles of golden sand, sunny atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle.

Arrive in Gold Coast

Byron Bay to Coffs Harbour

This journey takes you through the North Coast of New South Wales, an area renowned for its breathtaking beauty, native wildlife, surfing heritage and excellent fishing. Just 45 minutes south of Byron you can take a short detour to stop off in the coastal town of Ballina. Grab morning tea or an early lunch at one of the many cafes, visit the Big Prawn or stretch your legs on the beach. Back on the Pacific Highway, continue south until you reach Coffs Harbour. Located at the edge of the Solitary Islands Marine Park, it is a haven for dolphins, tropical fish, turtles and migrating whales. The Solitary Islands coastal walk has spectacular vantage points for whale watching between May and November, with the headlands offering superb views.

Coffs Harbour

It's a great place for a beach holiday with glorious stretches of sand galore and a laid-back coastal vibe and makes a fantastic base to explore the rainforests and waterfalls of the Waterfall Way or the incredible Solitary Islands Marine Park. Coffs Harbour has been defined by something big, yellow, and very kitsch the beloved Big Banana. Located on a working banana plantation, the walk-through banana was built in 1964, the first of Australia's Big Things. Today, its part of a fun park with toboggans, mini-golf, and a plantation tour and no trip to Coffs is complete without stopping for a photo opportunity and a chocolate covered banana treat. Holiday-makers take to the water at every chance they can get during a stay in Coffs Harbour and its no surprise that kayaking, diving and whale watching top the list of must-do activities. Immerse yourself in the soothing sounds and sights of nature as you kayak or canoe the rivers and creeks that flow through the Coffs Coast.

Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie

From Coffs Harbour, drive down the Pacific Highway south and take a detour to the beautiful, relaxed riverside town of Bellingen. Stop for a coffee in one of its lovely cafes, or a beer at the local brewery. From here, you can also check out the Promised Lands on the Never Never River, a hidden gem with stunningly crystal-clear waters that you can swim in. Head a little further up the B78 highway to take a walk through the breathtaking Dorrigo National Park and cool off at Dangar Falls, just outside of the Dorrigo township. After that, continue driving, and you will pass the town of Kempsey. If you are a country music fan or want to learn about country music in Australia, you can stop in at the Slim Dusty Centre. Slim was a country music icon in Australia, and the museum covers his life as well as costumes, images of Australian life and its people, and the music of some of Australia’s finest musicians. After about half an hour from Kempsey, you will arrive in beautiful Port Macquarie.

Port Macquarie Koala Hospital - suggested activity

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital was established in 1973 and is a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility. The Hospital is a popular tourist attraction which welcomes thousands of national and international visitors every year. The Hospital is also a scientific research, training and education centre.
The Koala Hospital consists of exhibit enclosures, a treatment clinic, intensive care units and rehabilitation yards, many of which have trees for koalas to learn to climb as part of the rehabilitation process. There is also a Koalaseum - a museum for Koalas which provides information on koala evolution and biology and interactive displays so visitors can touch koala fur or look down a microscope at koala poos (scat).
Admission is free, so we recommend bringing some cash to donate to their valuable conservation work.

Port Macquarie to Port Stephens

Today you will be driving again along the Legendary Pacific Coast Drive, one of the state's most beautiful routes. If you aren't in a rush and feel like a detour to explore more of the coast, then you will be rewarded by a stop in Forster. Seafood lovers can relax here over a lazy lunch of freshly caught oysters while overlooking the water. Continue driving south, and you will pass Myall Lakes National Park.
