Wild Bush Luxury: The Arkaba Five Day Walk

Today’s adventure takes you across the breathtaking basin of Wilpena Pound before entering Arkaba’s exclusive private wildlife conservancy. As the afternoon unfolds, you’ll descend into the secluded Black’s Gap bush camp, your home for the night, where signature swags await beneath the vast outback sky. After a hearty breakfast, your guides will whisk you by vehicle to the start of The Arkaba Walk. This morning’s trek winds through the largely flat, stunning interior of Wilpena Pound, culminating in a gentle 1.5 km climb to the spectacular rim, offering sweeping panoramic views that will leave you in awe. Arriving back at Black’s Gap bush camp around 5:30 pm, you’ll have time to refresh with a rinse shower before unwinding with an evening aperitivo as the sun dips behind the ancient ramparts, painting the sky with fiery hues. As night falls, your field guide and camp assistant will craft a gourmet South Australian-inspired camp dinner, perfectly paired with local wines. Then, surrender to the magic of the outback as you nestle into your swag bed for an unforgettable night beneath a glittering canopy of stars.

Stretch out and soak in the awe of one of the world’s oldest landscapes, as you dive deep into Arkaba’s incredible 500-million-year story, discovering how nature is reclaiming and healing this ancient land. Today promises to be the most breathtaking yet, as we venture into rolling hills along the iconic Heysen Trail. Wander through historic shepherds’ camps and mustering yards, where kangaroos and emus roam freely, bringing the region’s rich pastoral heritage vividly to life. The day’s grand finale challenges you with a thrilling 1 km climb up the Red Range, gaining 100 meters in elevation to reach a summit that rewards you with sweeping, panoramic views of the majestic Ikara-Flinders Ranges. From there, we’ll descend to the foot of the Elder Range, passing through postcard-perfect native Cypress forests before arriving at the second night’s signature swag camp, Elder Camp. Refresh with a hot bush shower and settle in for another unforgettable night beneath the glittering outback stars.

Walk through varied landscapes, meandering among fragrant mallee and towering cypress forests before climbing the majestic Red Range on your way back to the elegant Arkaba Homestead. Unwind with a glass of wine by the firepit, then savor a sumptuous dinner crafted by our talented in-house chef team. Wake to the golden glow of dawn spilling over the Elder Range, painting the rugged peaks in fiery reds and oranges. As you journey southeast, stroll leisurely through rolling hill country at the foot of the Elder Range, wandering among mallee and native pine forests. Ascend once more to the Red Range before descending to the tranquil, shaded banks of Arkaba Creek, lined with ancient river red gums and alive with the vibrant calls of galahs, parrots, and honeyeaters. At a relaxed pace, take time to soak in the breathtaking outback scenery, spot native wildlife, and capture stunning photographs. Arrive back at Arkaba Homestead mid-afternoon, where you can relax or choose an unforgettable pre-booked sunset scenic flight over the dramatic ramparts of Wilpena Pound. Cap off your adventure with a lavish feast at the homestea, a perfect finale to your unforgettable Arkaba experience.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a self-guided stroll along the serene Arkaba Creek. After farewells from the Arkaba team, depart at 8:30am for the scenic transfer back to Adelaide. Along the way, indulge in lunch and a wine tasting experience in the renowned Clare Valley wine region. Arrive at Adelaide Airport by 5:00pm, with onward flights departing from 6:00pm.
