Head to Visa Wellington on a Plate!
For two weeks in August, foodies descend on Wellington for an unforgettable city-wide culinary takeover.
Welcome to Visa Wellington on a Plate.
Founded in 2009, the Visa Wellington on a Plate festival brings together restaurants, cafes, bars and food trucks across the city in a celebration of innovative local cuisine.
Participating establishments create 'festival-specific' dishes to be enjoyed by visitors and locals during the event. The dishes are then judged throughout the 2 weeks, in a bid to be crowned the best of the best for their gourmet fare.
Pop-up restaurants, temporary food trucks and a huge range of food-themed events are set up across the city. Festival-goers in previous years have enjoyed some outstanding events, including the hugely popular three-course gourmet meal created and served by the inmates of the Rimutaka Prison, an outstanding selection of craft brews and local eats at Beervana, and the opportunity to get hands-on with some of New Zealand's greatest chocolate makers, plus much more!
The main competition for the festival consists of Dine Wellington, Burger Wellington and Cocktail Wellington, in which competitors create and craft a main dish, a burger and a cocktail and tapas pairing respectively, in an attempt to delight the palates of the judges and festival-goers.
With creations such as Mr Go's Kiwi China, China Kiwi - Chinese-style braised beef cheek with pickled kiwifruit and chilli jam and mayonnaise on a house steamed milk bun - taking out last year's top spot in Burger Wellington, or Coco At The Roxy's Sonntag's Journey - washed whiskey enriched with maple, vanilla and orange with a spiced pulled pork slider with Roxy Cherry Karma Cola chilli chipotle sauce and Sina slaw - which slid in to first place for the Cocktail Wellington category, you can be assured that your taste buds will be in good hands as you eat and drink your way around our vibrant capital.
With the next festival scheduled to take place from the 11th in August 2019, why not plan for a few days in Wellington, and enjoy some of the finest cuisine that New Zealand has to offer!
