Shantytown Heritage Park | New Zealand Tours
Explore the life of kiwi gold miners in the 1800’s.
What will you experience?
Located on the heart of the West Coast, go back in time as you enter a replica 1900’s pioneer town. With a steam train, a working sawmill, a holographic theater, and 30 period stores, houses and buildings, Shantytown is the most comprehensive village of its kind in New Zealand. The town also contains a hospital, fire station, Masonic Lodge, a Church and a Jail.
You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history of the area and see how hard life in New Zealand was during the West Coast gold rush through displays and experiences. Take a ride in the steam train through the surrounding rain forest, see the sights of a working sawmill then watch as the giant sluice gun blasts rock and earth then follow its path down the ‘race’ into the gold claim where you can pan for gold. Try traditional old fashioned sweets at the general store or pick yourself up a souvenir in one of the local gift shops.
Where is it located?
In the heart of the West Coast, Shantytown is located 10 kilometres south of Greymouth.
Who would enjoy this?
Those with an interest in history, those who wish to experience what life was like during the west coast gold rush, or anyone looking for a fun, educational day out.
The Shantytown Church was originally called St Patrick’s of ‘No Town’, and was transported up the river to Shantytown by barge in 1958.
