Pelorus Eco Adventures Hobbit kayak trip

Pelorus Eco Adventures showcases Middle-earth New Zealand with a guided kayak trip down New Zealand's Pelorus River - a famous film location for The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug.

What is the experience?
A river kayaking journey that explores a very famous South Island New Zealand Hobbit location. The Pelorus River was chosen as a film location for the wild river barrel scene in The Hobbit – The Desolation of Smaug.

Aboard a very safe inflatable double kayak, you will paddle yourself along the natural spring water that flows from the mountains into the Pelorus River. Your knowledgeable Pelorus Eco Adventures guide will point out all the specific Middle-earth film locations and give you inside information about the filming process.

Take the opportunity to stand on the same rock as Bilbo and his dwarf friends, and see first-hand the exact location where Kili was shot. This journey through Middle-earth New Zealand passes the same waterfall as shown in the movie, and your guide will take photos of the trip, available for purchase after if you wish.

Where is it located?
Halfway between Blenheim and Nelson is Havelock, which sits at the head of the Pelorus Sound, one of the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. The Pelorus River flows from the Richmond Range to the Pelorus Sound, and Pelorus Eco Adventures are based in Havelock.

Who would enjoy this?
In particular, Lord of The Rings and Hobbit fans will love this trip, however the spectacular scenery will appeal to anyone that wants to experience one of New Zealand’s beautiful crystal clear rivers on a fun and safe adventure.

The difficulty level of the kayaking is easy and the boats are very stable. There is approximately 2.5 hours of kayaking involved with lots of breaks along the way. You will need to allow 4.5 hours in total for this Middle-earth experience.

Interesting fact?
Environmental sustainability is a priority for Pelorus Eco Adventures. Both their kayaking shuttle bus and family van are run on a fish and chip oil recycled Bio diesel. They have built a small scale, sustainable processing plant to re-use the local canola oil from three local Havelock restaurants.
