Why not go for a game of golf at the beach?

There are lots of great golf courses in New Zealand. Next time you’re planning a golfing getaway, why not check out some that are right by the beach?

Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, Wellington

More than a century ago, golf was brought to the shores of New Zealand by Scottish pioneers. Today, it's the sport in New Zealand that has the highest participation rates from both men and women. Here you'll find world-class golf courses surrounded by stunning scenery.

This island country also has more than 9,000 miles of coast with hundreds of beautiful beaches. Why not have the best of both worlds and go golfing at the beach?

South Island

Just out of Christchurch is the Waimairi Beach Golf Club. Established in 1932, it's long been a location that will test your skill. The course has undergone a lot of changes in the past few years - it was once surrounded by pine trees, but now it's mostly made up of dune sand bunkers and waste areas with large greens. The beach location is ruggedly beautiful and is flanked by the silhouette of mountains. A brand-new clubhouse and short walk to the beach make this golf club even more desirable.

North Island

Paraparaumu, on the Kapiti Coast, has a world-renowned golf course: Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club. It's hosted the New Zealand Open 12 times, more than any other course. It's well maintained, expansive, green and picturesque – perfect if you're just getting started or are a seasoned pro.

It's easy to see why people of all levels of experience come from far and wide to play at the course. The nearby beach stretches out at low tide, with a calm, cool sea. When you've had a long day of golf, the sunsets over the water are not to be missed.

On the opposite side of the North Island in the Wairarapa Region is Riversdale Beach Golf Club. This course will be a bit challenging, but is easily walkable and provides great views of the water. The beach is a perfect and calming place to relax after you've made your way around the course.
