A night of exotic flavours at Auckland’s night markets

A massive selection of exotic dishes from around the world make Auckland’s night markets an essential stop on any food holiday.

Tantalise the taste buds with an unforgettable visit to one of Auckland's night markets!

It's foodie heaven. Introduced to Auckland in 2010, the markets have grown immensely from their humble beginnings in a Pakuranga car park. Starting with just 120 stalls and a small but eager crowd, the markets have exploded into a five-nights-a-week eating extravaganza. Each market draws crowds of 10,000 growling stomachs who come to nosh on an array of food from around the world – all without breaking the bank.

With more than 200 ethnic groups living in Auckland, according to the 2013 Census, the huge variety of food on offer mirrors the variety of people who call Auckland home. The markets now boast 200 stalls, 70 of which are dedicated to cooking up delicious street food from all four corners of the globe.

Strongly reminiscent of night markets in Taiwan or Hong Kong, the markets make for a delightful assault on your senses and it's easy to forget that you're in New Zealand at all. Take an amble around the stalls and have a nibble on old international favourites like pork buns and kebabs while being jostled gently by the crowd.

For the more adventurous, there's a huge selection of spicy and unusual snacks on offer to intrigue your taste buds. The key here is to surrender to the flavours and allow yourself to get lost in the aroma of exotic dishes and unfamiliar spices.
