Journey into the deep at Waitomo

Take the plunge with an underground adventure through the Waitomo Caves, where glow-worms are just one part of the experience.

Black water rafting, Waitomo, New Zealand

New Zealand has some of the world's most impressive below-ground features – so why not take the chance to explore them?

This region is famous for its glow-worms that can be seen in tranquil boat-rides. However for the more adventurous among travellers, these glow-worms and other magnificent cave features can be accessed in an adrenalin-pumping expedition.

The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company takes punters on a thrilling underground experience on their Black Abyss Tour.

What can you expect?

First, you'll don a wetsuit and undergo some basic training and safety demonstrations. Then, you'll abseil down 35 metres into the Ruakuri Cave, right into the depths of the caving system. From there, you can expect to crawl and climb through the dark, with an experienced guide to lead the way and impart their knowledge of the area's geology and history to you.

You'll even get the chance to whizz down a flying fox in the pitch-black for one of the greatest thrills of your life.

We can't forget the black water rafting part, either. This will have you tubing down the underwater river where glow-worms twinkling in the dark will illuminate your way. After this, you can expect to climb up cascading waterfalls, crawl through narrow gaps and wade through pools before you finally make your way back above ground.

Don't worry if this all sounds intimidating – your guides will be on-hand to tell you what to do and give you some help along the way.

This is one of the most unique and adventurous ways to experience the area, so it's worth giving it a go. You'll feel like a bona fide brave explorer by the end of your experience – think Indiana Jones and Lara Croft!
